Dead Ringers Review Amazon Prime

This TV series is based on the works of David Cronenberg, a renowned director in the indie film industry who emphasizes on visual horror, intensity, and thought-provoking sci-fi stories that require deeper interpretation. Despite the absence of Cronenberg’s involvement, the series maintains the same old style without any changes, as created by Alice Birch

The main plot of the story revolves around the lives of two twins, where the older twin named Elliot is a woman with various peculiarities in her personality to the extent that she falls under the category of mental illness. She is obsessed with her younger twin sister, Beverly, who is a normal and ordinary woman like anyone else. Both roles are played by Rachel Weisz. The story presents the differences between the two through their work as obstetricians and gynecologists who are trying to find funding to establish a center that helps women conceive directly. This center is the horrific story that she uses to study human embryos in order to create life outside the womb and implant it directly into the uterus. It challenges the ethical boundaries of medicine, which is the taboo that makes her successful in life as well. However, the major obstacle is the behavior of Alya, which is uncontrollable and leads to the twins making the decision to separate for the first time in their lives. But this decision brings about unexpected and severe consequences.

The plot of Dead Ringers isn’t directly confusing, but what makes it confusing is the abundance of dialogue in the story. The dialogue is fast-paced, complex, and difficult to follow, mostly due to the character of “Elliot” expressing his mental illness through dialogue. This makes it confusing for viewers, who must interpret and understand the story throughout. Additionally, the characters’ strange actions add to the difficulty in understanding the story. Many times, it’s unclear how a scene relates to the plot, and whether it’s based on reality or just a hallucination. All of this creates a tense, psychologically driven atmosphere that is difficult for most viewers to grasp.

The story is also full of strong and provocative scenes, especially those that blaspheme against morality. There are scenes of graphic sex, a bloody childbirth, and a close-up zoom into the birth canal as a baby is about to come out. There is also a scene with a vulnerable embryo being experimented on, and a scene with a surgical knife cutting into a human body with a focus on blood splattering without censorship. All of these scenes pay tribute to the original work of the film in a style reminiscent of David Cronenberg.

But what really captivates in this story is Rachel Weisz’s performance in two vastly different roles. Her beauty is part of what makes these twin characters charming, but it is a dangerously alluring kind of charm, evident from the opening scene in a restaurant where the twins are confronted by a man at the adjacent table, leading to a fiery exchange that scares him off. While the younger twin’s role appears more subdued and conventional compared to her mental illness sister, it is a character that is deeply troubled beneath the surface. The story eventually reveals how she feels about her twin sister throughout their lives, but it requires interpretation and understanding after watching until the end.

Overall, this series is heavy and tense, not a fun series that follows a simple plot. It emphasizes dialogue that requires a lot of interpretation and has strong drama in the style of David Cronenberg, which is the original inspiration for this story. It may not be familiar to general audiences, but if you like the actress Rachel Weisz, this is a work where she demonstrates different facets of herself and is definitely worth watching.
