I Woke Up a Vampire Review (No Spoiler)

This series originally aired in Canada and concluded with 16 episodes, but it didn’t gain much popularity at that time. However, Netflix has now brought it to a global audience with just 8 episodes. It’s worth noting that the show is not based on a comic book but rather the idea of its creator, . It’s not a particularly fresh or innovative concept but seems to be aimed at capturing a younger, teenage audience.

This series follows the typical teenage formula where the main character, Carmie Henley (portrayed by Kaileen Angelic Chang), discovers her special powers within just 20 minutes of the first episode. The advantage is that she skips the usual training steps and becomes adept with her powers right away. She is initially skilled and tries to use these powers to benefit her life, realizing that she might be a superhero. However, her cartoon-loving, geeky friend quickly points out that having powers might also mean having enemies.

The story then introduces a young demon hunter who coincidentally joins the same school as Carmie, and they become friends without realizing that they are foes. The plot is quite ordinary and doesn’t offer anything particularly deep or innovative. It’s a straightforward storyline suitable for a younger audience, especially kids.

In the school life aspect, the series attempts to portray the typical teenage journey of self-discovery through school theater performances. The main character, in order to secure a lead role, must compete with the mean girls who are trying to undermine her. She strives to find ways to avoid revealing her special powers to anyone, in order to secure a starring role in the school play. This plotline is also intertwined with a vampire girl and demon hunter, but it doesn’t offer a fresh take on the theme of self-discovery.

The character development doesn’t delve deeply into the exploration of uniqueness or individuality. The main character appears naturally skilled and talented from the beginning, which makes both parts of the story quite predictable and lacking in differentiation.

Furthermore, the addition of supernatural beings like vampires, werewolves, and even Medusas to the story is done quite simplistically. It gives the impression that these creatures coexist in human society, but the series doesn’t explore their uniqueness or special qualities. Even the close friend who serves as an ally and the enigmatic main antagonist are portrayed in a straightforward manner, resulting in a lack of differentiation and depth in the overall storyline.

The use of CGI and showcasing special powers in the series is done with a very low budget. The main character possesses a wide range of powers, including flight, similar to a superhero. However, the scenes depicting these abilities often appear quite unconvincing, and many of them come across as noticeably fake.

In summary, this series falls into the category of a supernatural-themed show with a vampire protagonist, specifically targeting a young audience. It’s unclear whether actual kids will enjoy it, as the overall quality is quite low, with repetitive and uninspired storytelling. The production quality is notably subpar. Unless you are a child or a parent who has to watch with their kids, it’s probably best to skip this one, as it likely won’t be worth your time.
