Detective Forst Review

The series adapted from a Polish novel may seem to present a promising premise, but in reality, it doesn’t deviate much from this formula. The story kicks off with a series of consecutive murders, each victim left on a mountain with their bodies bizarrely contorted and arranged differently, seemingly impossible for a single person to accomplish (like dragging a corpse up a tall tower). Additionally, there are mysterious coins and make to the protagonist experiences headaches and childhood memories resurface, linking him to the violent case. Due to his inappropriate behavior, he is removed from the investigation and teams up with a journalist attempting to unravel the mystery. This leads to an unconventional, off-the-books investigation, making him a target in the process.

From the plot structure, it indeed follows the basic and mysterious tone in this genre. However, the reasoning and connections in the story are not very well-executed. Both in terms of the killer’s motivations, who plays it bold without fear of being caught, and the lack of a clear resolution. Typically, in this type of murder mystery, there should be flashbacks showing how the killings were carried out and how the bodies were transported to that high mountain. Still, in this case, those explanations are entirely skipped, and the focus is solely on the scenes of the already murdered victims.

In terms of motivation, it may be plausible that the murderer harbors deep resentment towards the protagonist. However, the story takes an unexpected turn away from simply pursuing various potential victims, resembling the protagonist tracking a large secretive criminal organization, extending even to a villain from World War II. Despite the narrative focusing on the protagonist’s memories, when it comes to the scene revealing those memories, the story concludes abruptly and simplistically. There is an attempt to twist the plot into an illogical direction, portraying the protagonist as wrongly accused of being the killer, prompting the police to pursue him easily. This aspect of the series tries to steer the story in a different direction. Even after scenes suggesting a confrontation with the murderer, the story is left open for a second season, filled with many inexplicable elements. For instance, the murderer falling from a tall building, sustaining severe injuries, yet managing to escape and continue killing. This leads to a closing scene that is far worse than concluding the case logically.

Moreover, the murderer lacks justification in the murder scenes. In many instances, they seem to easily approach the victims and carry out the killings, even when the victims are influential individuals with protective families. There are scenes where the murderer reveals themselves, yet the protagonist fails to capitalize on these situations without providing a clear explanation as to why. These significant plot holes are quite frustrating.

The narrative also attempts to portray the protagonist’s secretive relationship with the boss’s daughter while maintaining a certain level of compassion for the journalist assisting in the investigation. There is an unnecessary insertion of scenes involving tension and sexual content, seemingly for the sole purpose of concluding the story with loose ends for the next season.

In summary, the series is a murder mystery genre filled with numerous unjustified plot holes and doesn’t conclude logically within the season, leaving the story hanging without clear reasons. It doesn’t entice viewers, except for those who may be interested in watching gruesome murder scenes, which the series manages to deliver in a frightening manner.
