The film is based on the 2020 American novel by Rumaan Alam and is directed by Sam Esmail , the creator of the TV series Mr. Robot. It stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, and Kevin Bacon. With a director and cast of such prominence, one might expect a grand apocalyptic narrative, especially considering Esmail’s background. However, the reality is quite the opposite. This film tells the story from the small perspective of an ordinary family on vacation, dealing with an apocalypse that seems to have no origin or destination.
If you were expecting this film to have epic apocalyptic scenes and extensive destruction, I have to say you’ll be disappointed for sure. This is a mid-budget film with many realistic scenes related to the actual apocalypse, but presented on a small scale. The film almost lacks the grand-scale apocalypse scenes that would make it highly thrilling. Instead, it adopts Sam Esmail’s storytelling style, the creator of the Mr. Robot series, delivering dialogue-driven narratives before inserting these scenes to create excitement and tension, rather than relying on CGI for direct destruction. It works to some extent, but it doesn’t leave a profound impression; it’s just brief, exciting moments scattered throughout the conclusion of each chapter.
The film evokes a sense of mystery, leaving viewers curious about how things unfolded. It successfully achieves this through a dialogue-driven narrative that gradually unveils the story bit by bit. The plot revolves around two families portrayed by Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke, ordinary people awakening to unexplained occurrences. The story unfolds through the perspective of a black character played by Mahershala Ali, who claims to be the homeowner when knocking on the door. The family is skeptical and tries to make sense of the inexplicable events, and much of the film revolves around the conversations between these two families, each with a different perspective on what is happening. As the story progresses, Kevin Bacon’s character emerges towards the end, adding tension and heightening suspense, along with squeezing out the secrets of the narrative. The answers provided, while not surprising, effectively clarify the story that has been hinted at throughout.

However, what the film didn’t do well is attempt to narrate the subplot involving the young daughter character, who is hooked on watching the legendary TV series “Friends” and is unable to stream it due to an interrupted internet connection. Throughout the story, she consistently tries to bring up this, contrasting it with the events in a dark comedy fashion. This continues until the film concludes with a final attempt to tie in the search for a way to watch the last episode of the series “Friends,” leaving the audience somewhat disappointed, especially considering there was already a scene that served as the apparent ending before.
