Obliterated Review (No Spoilers)
The undercover series with a plot resembling The Hangover, a team-up version of secret agents, appears to be a general slapstick comedy at first glance. Moreover, the cast consists of mostly second-tier actors, same this is a lower-grade Netflix series. However, this is a complete misconception, as the series excels in its internal content to the extent that it surpasses its overall appearance.
The strength of this series lies in the intricately detailed writing by the three creators of Cobra Kai: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald . They collaborate to direct and write the series themselves. While the plot may appear to be just a comedic film, the content delves deeply into various aspects. Each character has their own unique set of personal issues, such as a black men gay military man, the boss’s love problems with a subordinate, a tech-savvy nerd secretly in love with a team member, a father who chooses work over his only daughter, and many more. The series diligently weaves these issues into the narrative, and remarkably, it manages to do so without becoming boring. The distribution of roles and screen time is equal among the characters, each with their own strengths and selling points. They have individual storylines that are seamlessly integrated into the main plot, rather than being detached. These subplots serve as minor obstacles that gradually complicate the main mission, creating problems that are cleverly resolved one by one until the climax. Clearing these obstacles coincides with intense action scenes, making it a unique and exceptional writing job for a comedy that, at first glance, might seem devoid of substance but is, in fact, filled with unexpected depth.
And this is not typical slapstick comedy stumbling upon crazy situations like The Hangover. Instead, it’s a CIA action-packed series that is quite serious in its portrayal of undercover agents saving the world for real. However, with the twist that everyone is constantly drunk or drugged, one might wonder how the action scenes can be believable. The series manages to keep its main characters, the team leaders, from being completely incapacitated – they might be a bit tipsy, but some others are heavily affected. For example, the helicopter pilot who unknowingly consumes LSD-laced food goes on a psychedelic trip, disrupting the entire mission. Or the bomb disposal expert who is so heavily sedated that he remains in a deep sleep, and the team has to carry him everywhere because he’s the only one who can defuse the bomb. These characters add a unique and colorful dimension to the story, unlike the main team members who continue to engage in action scenes. It confirms that this is indeed a serious action genre because every episode includes fight scenes, longtake action, gunfights, car chases, and even helicopter shootings. These scenes are not just decorative elements but contribute significantly to the series, making it more thrilling and engaging.
In addition to that, the storyline is not straightforward, following the plot. There are multiple factions of antagonists, not just the Russian villains with the bomb, but also buyers who want this explosive device. It turns into a war among these gangs, all vying for control of the bomb, with the strategies of the protagonists and antagonists being equally clever throughout. There are unexpected twists that make the plot more intricate than initially perceived. This complexity adds depth to the narrative, making it more profound than what is commonly seen.
The comedic elements in this story are taken to the extreme. Both the dialogues and intentional slip-ups throughout the story are filled with explicit language. The situations in the story consistently invite laughter, such as a rented camel who turns out to be funny every time he appears, a young black man who is always hungry but never gets to eat anything, or the character’s drug-induced hallucinations that portray a mischievous little demon constantly messing with his mind. However, what pushes the boundaries the most are the explicit jokes involving male genitalia, with several scenes clearly depicting these moments. The most outrageous is a scene of a prank involving a metal rod with no censorship whatsoever in this story, including the uncensored exposure of the female character’s chest with no concealment whatsoever.
The drawback of the story may lie in the fact that the actors don’t stand out enough, and they possess only average charisma. Despite having well-written characters, the performances of each character are good, but everyone seems to be actors of a secondary grade brought together. For example, the protagonist, Nick Zano , who plays the role of a military team leader, has a resemblance to Chris Hemsworth, almost as if intentionally misleading the audience. The lead actress, Shelley Hennig, appears attractive and sexy but lacks sufficient charm as an actress.
However, there are still standout performers like Alyson Gorske, who plays a beautiful Russian girl. She manages to steal the scene with her appearance and plays crucial roles multiple times in the story, intentionally making her shine more than the lead actors.
In summary, this series is an action-comedy with a plot reminiscent of The Hangover, featuring a team of undercover agents foolish.
