Old Dads Review
A dark comedy from Netflix that satirizes the social aspects of the new era. It’s quite astonishing, but part of it might be because it’s the directorial debut of Bill Burr , a renowned comedian in the United States who’s known for his edgy stand-up humor. (I’m not American, didn’t know much about him before) it received a wave of criticism, some to the point of giving it a 1/10 or 0/10 rating, labeling it as trash.
However, on the viewers’ side, opinions sharply contrasted, with many considering it a confrontational film aimed squarely at critics. It also mocks the problems of the modern world where society is rapidly shifting from the old ways. Those who belong to this later group tend to agree that this is a film worth watching. But it comes with a caveat: it’s not suitable for the most sensitive of modern audiences. So, it’s a matter of perspective, but definitely worth a watch for the right audience.
This film is filled with scenes of clashes between old and new ways of thinking, starting with the three middle-aged who have been running their business for a long time And sell the business to a new management. However, they encounter the management of a much younger boss, which leads to a series of events. These events don’t revolve around ordinary work-related disputes, but rather the clash of the new era’s values encroaching on the territory of the older generation, often unfairly. This includes mistreatment of employees who are seen as not conforming to the new world order, leading to easy dismissals, and no legal recourse due to contractual obligations on the other side.
This problem also extends to the school where their child is studying. When the senior teachers adopt a new-age, ‘woke’ way of thinking in everything. Other parents support and promote this new mindset, pushing everyone to conform. Jack reluctantly complies because his wife needs certification from the teachers for their child to attend a private school. This makes him feel as though he is being pressured by the school’s social system and the parents who insist on conformity in every matter. However, he can’t express his anger.
In addition to that, all three characters also face problems with their wives. even in the world of their wives, there are issues. For instance, Connor’s wife (played by Bobby Cannavale) is loving and supportive of their child but has problems with other people. Even someone like Mike (played by Bokeem Woodbine), who is single and doesn’t want to get married, can’t escape these problems when his pregnant girlfriend is expecting. The film encapsulates various contemporary societal issues that are placed on women and projected onto men, resulting in extreme stress for everyone, as if there were time bombs ready to explode at any moment.
Every scene in this story is filled with recurring problems. However, it is humorously portrayed in every aspect, yet it also provokes frustration when these problems are so real in today’s society. It’s just that people have different perspectives on the situation and the way to solve these problems. The entire movie may seem like an attempt to rationalize the male perspective from a bygone era, but it’s the reason they genuinely think this way and need space and time to adjust. The film leaves this for you to ponder in the end.
