Royalteen: Princess Margrethe Review
The Norwegian teen movie that takes the story of a negative dynasty as its subject is not much different from the lives of ordinary teenagers who are curious and eager to try, leading to wrong decisions. However, the impact of being a princess is much heavier than that of an average person. The topic of the movie is interesting, but the storytelling is so flat that it’s boring, making the lives of ordinary teenage girls more exciting by comparison.
The movie uses the issue of a leaked video as its starting point, where the protagonist tries using drugs, The story involves a male friend who deceives her by recording a blackmail video. However, the film fails to explore these issues and instead depicts the protagonist solely experiencing personal turmoil. Throughout the movie, she remains trapped in a state of self-destruction, living a tense and fearful life. In the end, the story resolves itself easily without any climax.
In addition to that, the remaining story is like inviting viewers to follow the life of a teenage girl who has friends who support her in everything. There is a friend who secretly loves her, but it doesn’t play a significant role in the story. There is no main protagonist in this story, but there is a character who is a prince that the protagonist secretly likes, and she even uses his picture to help herself. The story attempts to present another aspect of the protagonist, showing that she has ordinary feelings just like anyone else, but it lacks any intriguing elements because viewers already know that everyone has these kinds of experiences in life.
The movie features a story about a family, where the parents seem to have life issues, but their roles are minimal to the point that they don’t feel like important characters. Towards the end, there is a small revelation that is somewhat intriguing, but it is the most interesting part of the story. In truth, if the film had delved deeper into this topic, it would have made the storyline much more intense and compelling.
Actress Ines Høysæter Asserson possesses beauty that matches the princess role, but it doesn’t contribute to making this character more interesting. Everything in the story appears ordinary and lacks any special elements.
Overall, it is a teen movie that attempts to present another side of the dynasty’s life, but the story turns out to be dull and lacking in interest. It feels like an ordinary teenage drama with the superficial layer of the royal dynasty’s society.
