[Suspect X Review Netflix] From a legendary Japanese novel transformed into an Indian movie with diminished allure.

Suspect X

Summary

Overall, it is considered a good film adaptation of the legendary Japanese murder mystery novel. However, there have been changes made to depict an Indian society and romance. This has toned down the intensity of the murder investigation genre, but regardless, viewers must still be captivated by the complexity of the story until the end.

Suspect X Review (No Spoilers)

The Indian suspense film, unlike a typical murder investigation, revolves around the intricate of a nerdy math teacher. He’s not handsome, has lots of pimples, and secretly harbors a deep affection for his next-door neighbor, the widow. He only dares to express his feelings by purchasing food from her shop every day. However, when she gets embroiled in a murder case and is unable to escape, he quickly offers his assistance and devises an elaborate plan for her to follow.

The story unfolds gradually revealing the truth to the audience after the police discover the body and confront the plans they had laid out. Throughout the narrative, viewers are led to believe they are witnessing a seemingly typical murder investigation, but they are aware all along that what they are seeing is a carefully constructed plan. There are subtle deviations, inconsistencies, and loopholes in the events, but they are so convincingly executed that it becomes a challenge to discern whether what they are witnessing is part of the plan engaged in a live game of cat and mouse. This element of suspense and intrigue is what makes the story so enjoyable, as it gradually unravels until the very end, leaving viewers with the complete truth.

The good thing about this story is not just the teacher’s plan, but it also involves the introduction of another character, a detective Police, who takes on the mission to search for the missing victim in this case. It so happens that he becomes close friends with the teacher during their time together in University. He is also remarkably intelligent, on par with each other, which makes the teacher’s initial plan face thorough investigation throughout. Is the widow, who is the prime suspect in the case, really the mastermind behind the elaborate scheme, or is there more to it? He is also drawn to her physical appearance, adding another layer of complexity to the entire story, making it seem like a web of intertwined plans all along.

Although the story may seem complex, the movie narrates it in a way that is easy to understand. It provides explanations for all the steps involved, including the intricate planning, which is compared to mathematical formulas that the audience might not initially comprehend. However, the movie simplifies it for the general audience, allowing them to follow along and think along with the characters.

While the original novel is considered a legendary work, There are only a few points where explanations might be skipped, but it doesn’t significantly harm the narrative. However, since this is an adaptation from a Japanese source to an Indian setting, there are substantial differences in the story. Everything appears quite different, and the film emphasizes the theme of love frequently, following the Indian film style. This may lead to the impression that the Japanese version had a more emotionally investigative approach to the murder case, even if the plot remains the same (there were also Japanese and Chinese film adaptations in 2008 and 2017, respectively).

Overall, it is considered a good film adaptation of the legendary Japanese murder mystery novel. However, there have been changes made to depict an Indian society and romance. This has toned down the intensity of the murder investigation genre, but regardless, viewers must still be captivated by the complexity of the story until the end.
