The Changeling Review
The series that begins like a fantasy horror fairytale for adults, set in the city of New York, is intriguing with its initial idea of intertwining the story with a mysterious witch in the deep forest who grants three wishes to the protagonist, Emma. This invites viewers to delve deep into the enigmatic mysteries.
However, the problem with the story is that it shifts its focus to the lives of the main characters, the parents, and their love life, from marriage and pregnancy to childbirth and child-rearing. This takes up a significant portion of the series, with about two full episodes before delving into the main storyline, which can be disappointing as the individual episodes hardly make any progress. It becomes incredibly confusing and frustrating, especially when it repeatedly returns to narrate events from the past, sometimes without providing a clear connection to the main storyline, leaving many unresolved mysteries and questions from the beginning to the end. The attempt to make the ending exciting with the appearance of mysterious giant creatures is made, but the series does not reveal , almost as if it teases the viewers without giving a clear view of what these creatures are. This leaves one wondering how the search for the missing wife is related to these mysterious creatures. For those who expect this to be an adult fantasy with plenty of scary scenes, they will be disappointed because there are hardly any such scenes throughout the series, making it seem like an intentional misdirection to deceive the viewers.
The characters in the story are quite disappointing. Actor LaKeith Stanfield may seem suitable for the role of a man who loves reading books and has to embark on real-life adventures, but he doesn’t have much charm in this role. As for the leading lady, Clark Backo , even though she is truly beautiful, the character she portrays comes across as a insane throughout the story. She appears disheveled, with old, tattered clothing, making it a strangely unconventional performance.
In summary, the story is quite confusing and lacks a clear narrative. It doesn’t progress much from the beginning to the end, leaving the audience without a clear understanding of what’s happening. I would recommend skipping it altogether.
