The Family Plan Review (No spoilers)
The movie by Mark Wahlberg has a plot that closely resembles many films in this genre. However, this one takes on the action-comedy family road trip theme, where the road trip involves a journey to Las Vegas amidst the pursuit of assassins. The protagonist must navigate the challenges of the journey while dealing with the ongoing chase, all the while attempting to fight back and strategize to keep the secrets being pursued. The film humorously exploits the situations during the journey, such as scenes where the mother and children accidentally fall asleep during a chase, and the protagonist has to improvise by shooting and fighting while blasting music in the car to cover up the noise. There are also moments of evading pursuers using a thrown-away mobile phone, claiming it’s to encourage the family to open up and communicate, but he couldn’t continue driving because he lacked a map, so he had to look for a paper map to use.
Still, the storyline involves the family dynamics where both children are experiencing typical teenage issues and are not open with their parents. The journey helps the protagonist open up and communicate with his children, addressing these issues in real life during the trip. However, it doesn’t weigh heavily on the narrative. There is also a subplot involving the protagonist’s wife, who constantly thinks that the only flaw in her otherwise perfect husband is his somewhat boring demeanor. However, during the journey, he transforms into a completely new person, surprising her with various unexpected qualities since the beginning of the road trip.
The film creates humorous situations along the way, making it thoroughly enjoyable to watch, even though it may seem somewhat over-the-top and unbelievable that no one realizes he’s being pursued and targeted for assassination. Scenes of fighting with assassins in a supermarket until it’s nearly destroyed, yet casually paying for groceries and walking away without anyone caring, add to the comedic charm. The movie leaves all these reasons unexplained without any further clarification.
The action scenes in the movie are well-executed, considering the moderate budget of the film, with no extravagant explosions or over-the-top sequences. Instead, it involves small-scale fights where the protagonist must quietly eliminate the villains to survive and protect his family. The wife of the protagonist, played by Michelle Monaghan, even joins the fight later in the story, making it more of a family movie than a serious action film.
As for the last boss are hinted and viewers might predict them early on, Because the actors portraying are well-known, making the plot relatively straightforward without much complexity. Even the protagonist’s past follows a conventional and predictable formula.
To sum it up, the movie is a family action-comedy road trip that is light-hearted and enjoyable. It smoothly tells a story with a mix of family dynamics and humorous action scenes interspersed throughout. However, the plot is quite ordinary, lacking standout elements, and follows a formulaic pattern without much uniqueness.
