The Horror of Dolores Roach Review (No Spoilers)

A drama, comedy, murder mystery series consisting of 8 short episodes, each lasting 25 minutes. It is fast-paced and entertaining right from the start, featuring a renowned stage actor involved in a murder case where human flesh is used to make “Empanada.” However, before the real culprit emerges to tell the story from the very beginning, the narrative cleverly weaves together the present-day investigation and the intriguing events of the past. The series unravels a captivating storyline with intricate details that no one had ever known before, keeping the audience engaged and eagerly awaiting the climactic ending.

The story revolves around the romantic drama and relationships of the characters in this small shop. The protagonist, Dolorose Roche, is still haunted by the disappearance of her ex-boyfriend before she encounters the unconventional courtship of Louis, who is not an ordinary person. He offers her free accommodation and a job as a masseur, which turns out well until a murder case arises. Then, he himself ends up destroying the evidence by using body parts to make pies for sale, which surprisingly becomes a hit. The fate of both characters becomes intertwined and inseparable.Dolorose Roche continues to unintentionally kill people who get involved with her from various perspectives, alternating between scenes of love and murder. Dolorose Roche exhibits clear symptoms of bipolar disorder but still retains more human qualities than Louis, who is ultimately unredeemable in all aspects. This leads the story of Dolorose Roche to have other angles, such as her search for her lost ex-boyfriend, which is a lingering question from the beginning, in order to find a conclusion at this point in the end. Although it may seem like an open-ended ending, it provides closure to the story.

Although the episodes are short, they still manage to provide good character development. Each character in the story has a deep and intriguing backstory. There are moments that make you never think that they would become victims, but the series finds bizarre reasons to make everyone a victim. The murder scenes for each person are filled with a lot of humor because Dolorose only has her strong hands and skills learned in prison, but she never used them. The reality of listening to prison stories and actually using them is different than expected. Although the murder scenes have a comedic tone, when it comes to Louis’ scenes, the seriousness and brutality of the corpses are emphasized, creating a chilling atmosphere that takes you to another world.

The actors Justina Machado and Alejandro Hernandez both deliver exceptional performances in this role. On one hand, they portray characters with extreme psychological disorders, but they transform into ordinary individuals who are oppressed by society. Both characters share these qualities, but their expressions and reactions to the circumstances are uniquely extraordinary.

In addition to that, the supporting characters Nellie (portrayed by Kita Updike) and Jonah Pearlman (portrayed by Ilan Eskenazi)) as a young couple also fulfill their roles effectively. They contribute to the story by adding a significant amount of love and depth to it. Their presence intensifies the weight of the romance, and it ultimately leads to a climax.

Overall, this is a compelling and intense short series that effectively portrays various aspects such as drama, murder, love, and the psychological effects of societal oppression. It successfully captures the audience’s attention and provides a unique and different experience. I highly recommend it to those who are looking for something intriguing and out of the ordinary.
