The Wheel of Time SS2 The action-fantasy series, with an initial budget of 80 million US dollars in its first season, though not as popular as “The Rings of Power” with its much higher budget of 465 million US dollars, faced some CGI issues in the last episodes. However, the strong foundation from long-standing source material resulted in a better storyline base, attracting a large following. While there were some criticisms and deviations from the original fan-favorite novels, they were far fewer than those faced by “The Rings of Power.” As a result, Amazon Prime recognized this and increased the budget for Season 2, making it even more impressive and addressing those weaknesses.
The Wheel of Time SS2 Review (No Spoilers)
This season focuses on the separate adventures of the five main characters, each with their own distinct storylines that diverge from the first season. They are all in different locations, and even though characters like Nynaeve and Nynaeve initially train together in the White Tower, their individual paths diverge as the story progresses. In the middle of the series, their separate storylines revolve around awakening their powers, each in their own unique way.
The remaining characters, Perrin, Mat, and Rand also have storylines centered on discovering hidden powers within themselves. According to White Tower legend, if a man possesses these powers, he will go mad. This season allows viewers to explore another dimension of the story and question the belief in this legend, whether it is true or not. Ultimately, the series provides a compelling answer to this question in the final episodes, leaving the audience impressed.
The storyline also emphasizes the introduction of many new antagonists, with Ishamael being one of the five servants of the Dark Lord who are working to awaken others in this era. This season introduces several new powerful antagonists who surpass those seen in the first season. Some of them may have appeared briefly or been mentioned in Season 1, and in this season, viewers get to see who they are in more detail.
The series does an exceptional job of gradually revealing high-level antagonists one by one in each episode. It also showcases the intricate political maneuvering and diverse goals within the antagonist. Despite their ruthless and cruel actions, each antagonist has their own reasons for doing what they do. While these reasons may not be morally right or acceptable from a general perspective, they hold significant meaning for these characters. The series effectively portrays the gray areas of the antagonists’ characters.
In this season, there are no purely evil or one-dimensional villains, much like the current main characters who are all undergoing a moral and ethical journey of self-discovery.
The main character from the Aes Sedai, Moiraine, starts off by having her powers severed early in the season, transforming into a character without magical abilities. However, she still wields significant influence and secretly aids the main team in subtle ways, making it challenging for the audience to understand her true intentions. She undergoes a transformation, evolving from a character who suppresses her negative emotions to one who fully embraces her emotions and unleashes them upon everyone.
The storyline intentionally creates suspense for viewers, making it uncertain whether her powers will return or if she has gone mad like Logain, whose story is also partially explored. Logain’s emergence and his role in the narrative are played out exceptionally well in his smaller moments, but he remains an integral part of Moiraine’s storyline.
Overall, the series effectively juggles the complexities of these characters, particularly Moiraine, creating a constant sense of intrigue about her actions, the potential return of her powers, or whether she has gone down the same path as Logain.
Apart from the first two episodes, which took quite a while to set up the story and felt somewhat ordinary, but as we progressed into the third episode, the series improved significantly. This is evident from the way they skillfully twisted the plot in each episode and the impressive use of CG elements throughout the series, especially in episode 8, where they spent the whole hour on an epic battle in the grand final city, rather than a last-minute. Combined with the character development that gradually brought all the characters together in episode 8, it was truly outstanding. The storyline leaves you eagerly anticipating season 3, making it a highly commendable work of fantasy from Prime, even surpassing “The Rings of Power” for the entire season.
