They Cloned Tyrone Review (No Spoilers)

The most extraordinary black-centric film from the debut director Juel Taylor who was previously a screenwriter for Creed II, seems to have drawn inspiration from the works of director Jordan Peele and elevated it further. If anyone has seen the movie’s trailer beforehand, they would notice that it heavily spoils many crucial scenes, even up to the ending. I strongly advise against watching it to preserve the surprise! This review, too, will refrain from revealing any major spoilers.

The story unfolds in pre-smartphone era, so the visuals from the beginning lack sharpness and have a vintage vibe. The film remains dark and mysterious throughout, However, the retro setting serves a purpose to keep the narrative concise, as there are fewer distractions from modern technologies, allowing the plot to progress seamlessly.

The tale begins with the protagonist, Fontaine, seeking Money from his friend (Slick). Their encounter ends with a sudden car ambush that leaves Fontaine shot and waking up the next morning with no recollection of the event. He goes on another quest for money, but Slick and Yo-Yo remember the strange incident. Together, they try to unravel the mystery behind the peculiar events.

As they dig deeper, the story becomes an escalating whirlwind of confusion, with every answer leading to more questions. The film masterfully blends elements of fun, comedy, excitement, and suspense throughout the entire runtime. Just when it seems like the story might end in the first hour with a small zombie-like scene combined with elements from “The Matrix,” the truth behind all the events that occurred prior is finally revealed. For those who don’t pay attention to the runtime, they might think the film concludes at this point, but it’s only the halfway mark!

The latter half of the story takes a different direction, transforming into a profound sense of disappointment from the reality that unfolded in the first hour. Before revealing the hidden secrets little by little, the story delves into the true life of the protagonist, Fontaine, and brings back the unresolved issues from the beginning for another round of confrontation. However, when the plot twist was revealed, it turned out to be quite simple, diverging significantly from the intricacies presented in the first hour. However, even though the film didn’t start out as a serious drama, it originally belonged to the genre of Dark Comedies. Viewers who were initially intrigued by the lighter moments might not be too concerned, but those who were engaged in a more serious tone could be somewhat disturbed by this aspect. The story also reveals important secrets of its origin once again, which helps to enrich the narrative even further. Before concluding with an end credit scene that loops back to the new city! This becomes a satisfying finale that opens up new possibilities and takes the ideas to a whole new level!

In addition to being continuously entertaining with its non-stop unfolding story, all three actors are considered to have prominent leading roles. John Boyega, who plays the protagonist in this story, is unrecognizable as Finn from Star Wars. He portrays this character with a raw and edgy demeanor, resembling a high-strung drug dealer. He exudes intense emotions, sports a scruffy beard, and lacks the usual charm, yet underneath it all, there is a layer of dramatic backstory from his troubled childhood with his younger brother, which remains intertwined throughout the narrative. This is a crucial aspect of the story that adds depth and significance to the overall plot.

Teyonah Parris, who originated her role as Monica Rambeau in “WandaVision,” continues her character’s journey in “The Marvels.” Initially, she appears as a seemingly brainless bimbo, but as the story progresses, her intelligence gradually surfaces, and her desire to become a doctor becomes evident. Until the city’s secrets are revealed, she finally gets the catalyst she needs to pursue her true aspirations once again.

Jamie Foxx, in the role of a heavily disguised face, delivers the most playful and hilarious performance in the story. His witty and teasing lines keep the audience entertained throughout the film. However, amidst all the humor, there lies a cunning and villainous intelligence that he cleverly conceals. As the story unfolds, it turns out that he becomes the one who finds a way out for the group in the end. Despite the seemingly frivolous nature of his character, he plays a crucial role in the plot.

Overall, They Cloned Tyrone is a fun movie with a fresh and unique storyline. While it may not be entirely groundbreaking, it successfully combines different elements together. The execution aligns with the intentions, and it should resonate with viewers seeking something innovative, especially on Netflix where such films are less common.
