Thursday’s Widows Review Netflix

This Mexican series opens with a scene of three bodies found dead in a swimming pool before unraveling the story by tracing back to their origins through the perspective of their wives. In the first episode, it meticulously details the affluent gated community where everything is readily available, allowing the wealthy residents to lead comfortable lives without having to venture outside. This attracts several affluent families, and their wives form a group to take care of the community. Among the elite of this community is the so-called ‘Thursday’s Widows,’ named so because their husbands regularly gather on Thursdays. The series focuses on five different families, telling each family’s story in separate episodes, highlighting that even the wealthy have various life problems. These issues include being suddenly fired without informing their families, extramarital affairs, domestic violence, and struggles with stepchildren. All of these stories are narrated through the perspective of the character who has the least problems and leads the group, gradually weaving all the events into the first scene to help viewers understand how the accident occurred.”

The concept of this story is Ok, but the problem lies in every family narrating their past in a conventional and ordinary manner. The severe troubles of the wealthy are not significantly different from those of ordinary people; they are simply individuals who had a lot of money and that led to their families facing hardships (all families share this problem). This makes the initial accident appear ordinary and it doesn’t make sense to some people when there are other options available but they choose this path instead. Even though they may have been heavily deceived, it is still difficult to believe that it could be possible. Additionally, there is no investigative element whatsoever regarding the deaths of individuals at this level of affluence.

The storyline attempts to sell sex appeal multiple times within every family, which is common in Mexican soap operas. However, this series deliberately sells this to every couple, selling every beautiful female actress, as if it’s a mandatory scene, even though it’s not necessary.

It heavily emphasizes selling the downfall of the high-society lifestyle, leaving viewers with a rather dull and unsatisfying ending. It’s advisable to skip this one altogether.
