Who is Erin Carter? Review Netflix (No Spoilers)
The plot of this genre is indeed highly repetitive, almost resembling a remake from some prior work. However, this is a new creation presented in the format of a concise 7-episode series. It maintains a tight storyline and progresses with the plot according to the title “Who is Erin?” In each episode, particularly in the first three, the narrative focuses on minor events stemming from the well-publicized supermarket robbery case. These events lead those who are aware of her true identity on a journey to discover her, generating new cases in each episode. Although she manages to resolve the issues in each episode, creating a sense of closure, certain aspects are left unresolved towards the end, allowing the storyline to continue unfolding endlessly without a definite conclusion. This narrative style is employed in the first three episodes as a way to introduce and showcase her abilities to the fullest, akin to portraying her as a secret agent. However, there’s almost no information given at all until episode 4, where her entire backstory is revealed in a single episode. The revelation takes on a blend of Fast & Furious and espionage themes. Then, the story shifts back to a new direction by unveiling the main antagonist in the last 4 episodes, along with characters from her past who return to seek revenge. The storyline intricately ties all characters into various events, creating a web of connections that seems slightly overwhelming but remains acceptable. The ending follows a simple formula, devoid of any abrupt twists, providing a satisfying and neatly concluded finale.
However, despite the plot not being entirely novel, there are elements that are impressively executed. One notable aspect of the series is the frequent use of action scenes, which are employed in every episode. This approach adds variety to the storytelling by incorporating a diverse range of action scenes. There are scenes featuring car chases through the streets of Spain, grand-scale gold heists that are appropriately monumental, and various combat scenes involving the protagonist, Erin Carter, portrayed by Evin Ahmad. Her appearance is captivating and charming, and she performs these scenes exceptionally well. The pacing of the action scenes is consistent, even though they might appear a bit over-the-top at times. This prevents viewers from becoming bored as there are more action sequences to enjoy compared to typical series.
Another aspect that is well executed is the way the story attempts to weave in the protagonist’s life as a lower-class woman in an upscale neighborhood. Her husband is a surgeon, her in contact with wealthier neighbors, leading to constant clashes and interactions. Problems arise both within the school environment and the community, with her rebellious daughter’s behavior adding to the mix. Primarily stemming from a secretive issue she must personally resolve, even though she manages to resolve those issues well, her life’s problems continue to worsen over time. However, by the end, all the issues are resolved and fitting.
Summary: Despite the repetitive storyline lacking novelty, there are compensatory elements with numerous action scenes, including impressive large-scale action sequences. Additionally, the incorporation of the life storyline is well-executed. Overall, it’s an enjoyable series worth watching. I recommend giving it a try.
